Lesson focus: Learn to accept God’s promises in faith and thank Him for loving us.

Did the story stop after David had defeated Goliath? Was God’s plan only until there?
NO! God had chosen David to become the next King of Israel. God had given David victory over so many wars, and after King Saul died, David became the second King of Israel, the chosen King by God Himself. David was 30 years old when he became the King. He was anointed by Samuel when he was still young, so he had to wait according to God’s time!

David was a good King, he made good laws and was fair to his people, because he trusted God for strength and help to lead Israel wisely. David loved God so much because he knew that God had chosen him from a shepherd to become the King of Israel, God always helped him to win all the battles. Now he was living in his palace in Jerusalem. He thought, “How come I stayed in such a nice place but the ark of God was still inside a tent?”

Now he wanted to honor God to build a temple, a permanent home for the ark of God in Jerusalem so David told the prophet Nathan about it. Do you think that God would be happy of what David had planned for?
But God told Nathan, NO! Why? It was not the time yet to build the temple/house for God! It was not David who would build the temple for GOD! What do you think how David felt? He was surely disappointed and sad. Later, it was Solomon, his son who would then build the temple of God!

But, God had a BIGGER plan for David! GOD gave David a promise!

GOD promised to make David’s name Great and to build his offspring/descendant’s kingdom and throne forever. What does it mean? God promised that all of Israel’s kings would always come from David’s family. God would make David’s kingly line last forever!

This was a special blessing as the first King – Saul, his son-Jonathan was not allowed to become the next King, but God chose David instead. But for David, the next King of Israel would be his son, Solomon then the next would be Solomon’s son and then his grandson would become the next King after Solomon and so on.

But did King Solomon last or live forever? NO! He died one day. So, who was God referred to when He said that your house and kingdom will endure forever? Could anyone live forever?

What God meant in His promise to David was that the Savior, the promised Messiah would be born into David’s family! He would live and reign forever! When David heard about this promise, he could not believe it! He thought “Who am I that a shepherd boy could become the great-great-grandfather of the coming Messiah?” It was about 1,000 years later when Jesus was born.

David praised GOD with humble thankfulness for His amazing goodness & grace. David did not become so proud or arrogant for he was chosen by God! David trusted and obeyed God. Over the years, David learnt that God always keeps HIS promises. He knew that God was always with him and David believed in Him! David never saw the Messiah being born, but he believed it would happen as what God had promised!

God has always kept His promises to all the chosen people and to us even until now!

 David had learnt to trust God to keep His promises! David praised and thanked God for His love and promise!
 God has entrusted us all with different talent and different portion.
 We must be faithful in the little things that He has given us! We come to learn and to serve God! Serving God is also by His grace!
