Summary:

A lot of time, we want be the more important one, get to be served all the time is awesome. But, Jesus said, “If you want to be great (the important one) in God’s kingdom, you must learn to be the servant all of all”.

Just like us, Jesus’ disciples also wanted to be the more important one in Jesus’ eyes.

These are James and John. One day, James and John came to Jesus and asked “Teacher, can you do something for us?” Jesus answered, “What do you want me to do for you?” James and John then said, “Could you let us sit on your right and one of us on your left in God’s kingdom?

James and John wanted to have the best place next to Jesus. They wanted to be greater than the other disciples. When the rest of disciples heard about it, they became unhappy with James and John; as they also wanted to get the special seat beside Jesus.

So, Jesus called the 12 and talked to them that “Whoever wants to be great in God’s kingdom must be the servant of all”. For even He himself came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life for us.” He is the King of kings and He is God, but He is willing to come to earth and be a suffering servant by dying on the cross. If Jesus, our Lord, serves others; we, His followers, must also serve others just like Him.

Another time, Jesus also showed how He served His disciples.

At that time where Jesus and His disciples lived, it was a norm for the people to wash their feet before entering a house, as the road outside was very dusty. This feet washing was normally done by a servant of the house.

One time Jesus and His disciples got ready to celebrate the Passover feast. Jesus and His disciples were going to have a very special meal for the feast at one place. They walked there and after some time they finally arrived at the prepared place. They would like to go into the house, but nobody was there to wash their feet. A basin, a towel, and water were there, but no servant was there to wash their feet.

So, Jesus removed his outer clothing and wrapped the towel around his waist. He then poured water into the basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

The disciples were surprised that their Lord would do the job of a servant. One of them even refused to be washed by Jesus, but Jesus insisted to wash his feet. After Jesus had finished washing, He asked His disciples, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” And then He said, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you”.

This does not mean that His disciples must be a servant who washes feet at the entrance of the door; but Jesus wants His disciples to serve others wherever they go.

Because we are the followers of Jesus, we must also do the same thing. We all must learn to serve others, just as shown by Jesus. Children will see some pictures that are showing act of serving in the class.
