Ringkasan:

After telling us how to love and worship God in the first four commandments, God tells us in the last six how to love and value other people. These ethical principles are a revelation of God’s own character, which is the standard toward which God transforms our lives.

The fifth commandment – honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you – addresses relationships within the family, the basic institution of society. When Paul wrote his instructions to obey parents, he spoke specifically to children (Ephesians 6:1).

The fifth commandment is the only one of the ten that includes a promise of blessing to those who obey it. God blesses those who obey this commandment with a long life. Implied in the promise is a warning to those who disobey. In the Old Testament, God prescribed severe penalties for people who dishonored their parents (Exodus 21:15, Exodus 21:17). Disrespect to parents is disrespect to God and children who honor their parents honor God, for parents’ authority over their children is delegated by God, who is the ruler over-all creation.

Honoring godly parents who are loving, kind and enjoyable may be easier than honoring parents who are selfish, critical and abusive, but God ‘s commandment applies to all. The honor parents are due is not dependent upon their character but upon the honored position in which our sovereign God has placed them.

The New Testament (Romans 13; 1 Peter 2) applies this commandment even more broadly to all whom God has placed in authority. Whether or not we agree with government officials, employers, teachers, or church elders, we are to treat them with respect, for God has put them in their positions.
